The heath is silent like a faceless moon That shines upon the silvery willow. The river carries all of yesterday's sorrow To a heartless sea and colourless billow. From dawn till dusk a maiden pale Dressed in damask gown and veil Drew from her fiddle an elegy Of most soft and tender melody! And as she played each ringing chord Which lingered in field where linnets soared Each sparkling pond rippled with glee While round it frolicked the honey bee. Reaped and shorn were the golden rye! Slow and shrill was the vixen's cry! And over the rooftops and the rustic road Sounded the strings and maiden's ode. Through sweet cadence and haunting note Came forth a song from the maiden's throat! And lifting her veil she ceased to play For on her face was the light of day!
